OVERVIEW

This project explored how Microsoft Fabric capacity usage could be translated into clearer and more transparent cost attribution. The goal was to help teams better understand how shared platform resources contribute to overall cloud spending.

THE PROBLEM

Shared Microsoft Fabric capacity makes it difficult to understand which teams, workloads or activities are driving costs. Without clear attribution, organisations can struggle to identify idle capacity, understand usage patterns and allocate costs fairly.

APPROACH

Our team developed a cost attribution framework using synthetic Microsoft Fabric usage data. The workflow covered synthetic data generation and validation, definition of cost attribution rules, enrichment with governance attributes, and development of an interactive R Shiny dashboard to communicate usage and cost allocation. As team lead, I coordinated the overall project delivery and led the synthetic data generation and validation, cost attribution modelling, and dashboard development.

BUSINESS VALUE

The dashboard improves transparency around Microsoft Fabric cost allocation by showing how usage and costs are distributed across teams and workspaces. This helps the business better understand resource consumption, identify cost drivers, and manage shared capacity more efficiently.
